6-Day Machame Self-Supported Trek Itinerary

Day 0: Arrival in Kilimanjaro / Moshi

Welcome to Tanzania! Arrive at Kilimanjaro International Airport and transfer to your hotel in Moshi. Meet your guide for a briefing, check your gear, and prepare for your self-supported adventure.

Day 1: Moshi – Machame Gate – Machame Camp

Drive to Machame Gate (1,790m) for registration. Begin trekking through rainforest, carrying your own gear. Set up camp at Machame Camp (3,010m). Trek duration: 5–6 hours.

Day 2: Machame Camp – Shira Camp

Trek up a steep ridge exiting the rainforest into moorland. Carry your own gear and set up camp at Shira Camp (3,840m). Enjoy scenic views along the way.

Day 3: Shira Camp – Lava Tower – Barranco Camp

Acclimatization day: climb high to Lava Tower (4,630m) then descend to Barranco Camp (3,950m). Carry and manage your own food, water, and camping gear.

Day 4: Barranco Camp – Barafu Camp

Climb the Barranco Wall and traverse several valleys to reach Barafu Camp (4,680m). Prepare your camp for the summit night. Self-supported trekking continues.

Day 5: Summit Attempt – Uhuru Peak – Mweka Camp

Start around midnight to Stella Point (5,756m) and continue to Uhuru Peak (5,895m). Descend to Barafu, rest, then continue to Mweka Camp (3,100m). Carry all personal gear and food.

Day 6: Mweka Camp – Mweka Gate – Moshi

Descend through rainforest to Mweka Gate. Celebrate your self-supported climb and transfer back to Moshi for rest or onward travel.
