Arrive at Kilimanjaro International Airport and transfer to your hotel in Moshi. Final gear check, buy last-minute supplies, and attend a short briefing about the self-supported logistics. Overnight in Moshi.
Drive to Umbwe Gate and register. Begin the steep, direct ascent through dense rainforest. Expect a strenuous climb to Umbwe Cave Camp (approx. 2,850m). Set up your own camp and rest.
Continue ascending the Umbwe ridge; the trail joins the Machame route before reaching Barranco Camp (approx. 3,960m). Prepare for the Barranco Wall the following day. Shorter day to aid acclimatization.
Climb the famous Barranco Wall (a thrilling, non-technical scramble) then traverse valleys to Karanga Camp (approx. 4,035m). Manage your own food and water carefully.
Short but steady climb to Barafu Camp (approx. 4,680m). Set up camp early, organize summit kit, eat and rest well for the midnight push.
Begin the summit attempt around midnight. Climb to Stella Point then continue to Uhuru Peak (5,895m) for sunrise. After celebrating, descend to Barafu for a short break then continue down to Mweka Camp (approx. 3,100m) for overnight.
Walk through lush rainforest to Mweka Gate. Sign out, receive your summit certificate, and transfer back to Moshi for a hot shower and rest — end of trek.
Note: The Umbwe Route is steep and fast. Self-supported style requires excellent fitness, experience at altitude, and careful logistical planning (food, water treatment, waste packing). Consider adding an extra acclimatization day if you are prone to altitude sickness.
