5-Day Marangu Standard Trek Itinerary

Day 0: Arrival in Kilimanjaro / Moshi

Welcome to Tanzania! Arrive at Kilimanjaro International Airport and transfer to your hotel in Moshi. Meet your guide for a briefing, check your gear, and enjoy a good night’s rest before the adventure begins.

Day 1: Moshi to Marangu Gate & Trek to Mandara Hut

After breakfast, drive to Marangu Gate. Begin trekking through lush rainforest, crossing streams and enjoying the local flora and fauna. Reach Mandara Hut (2,700m) in about 4–5 hours. Overnight at the hut, acclimatizing for higher altitudes.

Day 2: Mandara Hut to Horombo Hut

Continue trekking through the heath and moorland zones. Stop at scenic viewpoints along the way. Arrive at Horombo Hut (3,720m) in 5–6 hours. Enjoy a hearty meal and prepare for the next day’s ascent.

Day 3: Horombo Hut to Kibo Hut

Today is a moderate trek through alpine desert. Cross the lunar landscape of Kilimanjaro and reach Kibo Hut (4,700m) by afternoon. Rest well as summit night is ahead. Trek duration: 5–6 hours.

Day 4: Summit Attempt & Descent to Horombo Hut

Start around midnight to reach Uhuru Peak (5,895m) by sunrise. After taking in the breathtaking views, descend back to Kibo Hut and then to Horombo Hut for rest. This is the most challenging day, but your guides and porters are there to support you.

Day 5: Horombo Hut to Marangu Gate & Return to Moshi

Descend through the rainforest to Marangu Gate. Celebrate your successful climb and receive your summit certificate. Transfer back to Moshi for a comfortable overnight stay or onward travel.

Tip: Make sure to drink plenty of water and take it slow during the ascent. The Marangu Route offers the comfort of huts and a well-established path, making it perfect for first-time climbers.
