6-Day Rongai Standard Trek Itinerary

Day 0: Arrival in Kilimanjaro / Moshi

Meet our driver at Kilimanjaro Airport and transfer to your hotel in Moshi. Evening briefing and gear check with your mountain guide. Overnight in Moshi.

Day 1: Moshi – Nalemoru Gate – Simba Camp

Drive to Rongai (Nalemoru Gate) on the northern side near the Kenya border. Begin trekking through farmland and pine forest before reaching Simba Camp (2,650m).

Day 2: Simba Camp – Kikelewa Camp

A steady hike with beautiful views of the Kenyan plains. Overnight at Kikelelwa Camp (3,450m). Excellent acclimatization day with light walking.

Day 3: Kikelewa – Mawenzi Tarn Camp

A short but steep climb to Mawenzi Tarn (4,330m), located beneath the jagged Mawenzi Peak. One of the most dramatic camps on Kilimanjaro.

Day 4: Mawenzi Tarn – Kibo Hut

Traverse the lunar desert known as "The Saddle" between Mawenzi and Kibo. Arrive at Kibo Hut (4,700m). Rest early to prepare for the midnight summit push.

Day 5: Summit Attempt – Uhuru Peak – Horombo Hut

Begin at midnight toward Gilman’s Point (5,685m). Shortly after, continue along the crater rim to reach Uhuru Peak (5,895m), the highest point in Africa.

Descend back to Kibo for breakfast, then continue to Horombo Hut (3,720m) for a well-earned rest.

Day 6: Horombo Hut – Marangu Gate – Moshi

Descend through the rainforest to Marangu Gate. Collect your summit certificate and drive back to Moshi for your celebration dinner.

Rongai is the quietest route on Kilimanjaro — dry, scenic, and ideal for trekkers wanting a peaceful climb with steady acclimatization.
