Drive to Umbwe Gate and begin a steep, direct climb through dense rainforest. The trail follows a narrow ridge with continuous ascent before reaching Umbwe Cave Camp (2,850m).
Continue along the Umbwe ridge until the trail merges with the Machame Route. Beautiful views of the valleys and ridges appear as you approach Barranco Camp (3,960m).
Climb the scenic but challenging Barranco Wall, then cross several ridges and valleys before reaching Karanga Camp (4,035m). A key acclimatization day.
Ascend steadily across a rocky, barren landscape to Barafu Camp (4,673m). Rest early and prepare for the midnight summit push.
Begin the summit attempt at midnight. Climb steep switchbacks to Stella Point (5,756m), then continue along the crater rim to Uhuru Peak (5,895m).
Descend back to Barafu for rest, then continue to Mweka Camp (3,100m) for overnight.
Descend through the lush rainforest to Mweka Gate. Collect your summit certificate and return to Moshi for your celebration dinner.
Umbwe is the steepest route on Kilimanjaro — rewarding but recommended only for strong, experienced trekkers seeking a fast and direct ascent.
