6-Day Umbwe Standard Trek Itinerary

Day 0: Arrival in Kilimanjaro / Moshi

Arrive at Kilimanjaro International Airport and transfer to your hotel in Moshi. Evening briefing and equipment check with your guide.

Day 1: Moshi – Umbwe Gate – Umbwe Cave Camp

Drive to Umbwe Gate and begin a steep, direct climb through dense rainforest. The trail follows a narrow ridge with continuous ascent before reaching Umbwe Cave Camp (2,850m).

Day 2: Umbwe Cave Camp – Barranco Camp

Continue along the Umbwe ridge until the trail merges with the Machame Route. Beautiful views of the valleys and ridges appear as you approach Barranco Camp (3,960m).

Day 3: Barranco Camp – Karanga Camp

Climb the scenic but challenging Barranco Wall, then cross several ridges and valleys before reaching Karanga Camp (4,035m). A key acclimatization day.

Day 4: Karanga Camp – Barafu Camp

Ascend steadily across a rocky, barren landscape to Barafu Camp (4,673m). Rest early and prepare for the midnight summit push.

Day 5: Summit Attempt – Uhuru Peak – Mweka Camp

Begin the summit attempt at midnight. Climb steep switchbacks to Stella Point (5,756m), then continue along the crater rim to Uhuru Peak (5,895m).

Descend back to Barafu for rest, then continue to Mweka Camp (3,100m) for overnight.

Day 6: Mweka Camp – Mweka Gate – Moshi

Descend through the lush rainforest to Mweka Gate. Collect your summit certificate and return to Moshi for your celebration dinner.

Umbwe is the steepest route on Kilimanjaro — rewarding but recommended only for strong, experienced trekkers seeking a fast and direct ascent.
