7-Day Rongai Standard Trek Itinerary

Day 0: Arrival in Kilimanjaro / Moshi

Pick-up at Kilimanjaro International Airport and transfer to your hotel in Moshi. Meet your guide for a detailed briefing and equipment check.

Day 1: Moshi – Rongai Gate – Simba Camp

Drive to the northern side of Kilimanjaro near the Kenyan border. Begin trekking through farmland and pine forest to Simba Camp (2,650m).

Day 2: Simba Camp – Second Cave / Kikelewa Camp

Hike steadily with views of Mawenzi. Lunch at Second Cave (3,450m), continue to Kikelewa Camp (3,630m) for a peaceful overnight.

Day 3: Kikelewa – Mawenzi Tarn Camp

A short but steep climb to Mawenzi Tarn (4,330m), one of the most beautiful camps on the mountain. Afternoon free for rest and acclimatization.

Day 4: Mawenzi Tarn – Acclimatization Day

Optional acclimatization hike around the Mawenzi ridges. Spend a second night at Mawenzi Tarn to improve acclimatization for a safer summit attempt.

Day 5: Mawenzi Tarn – Kibo Hut

Cross the lunar desert saddle between Mawenzi and Kibo to reach Kibo Hut (4,700m). Early dinner and rest before the midnight summit push.

Day 6: Summit – Uhuru Peak – Horombo Hut

Start at midnight and climb slowly to Gillman’s Point (5,685m). Continue to Uhuru Peak (5,895m). Descend via Kibo to Horombo Hut (3,720m).

Day 7: Horombo – Marangu Gate – Moshi

Final descent through rainforest to Marangu Gate. Collect your summit certificate and transfer to Moshi for a hot shower and celebration.

The Rongai Route is the quietest route on Kilimanjaro — excellent for those who want fewer crowds, steady acclimatization, and a scenic wilderness approach.
